Rezoning Champ Brad Lander Wins NYC Primary Tuesday

Former New York City Comptroller and rezoning champion Brad Lander emerged victorious in Tuesday’s congressional primaries in New York City, winning his contest against U.S. Rep. Dan Goldman.

Lander received 64.5 percent of the vote, while Goldman received 34 percent, according to Politico.

The real estate industry is closely watching the results, as Lander has been a strong advocate for rezoning efforts to spur housing development in the city.

In an interview with Commercial Observer during his unsuccessful mayoral run in 2024, Lander discussed his efforts to rezone swaths of the city, including the Gowanus neighborhood.

According to the report, Lander said, “When I was a council member, I championed the city planning effort to do that for Gowanus. And it was unique in a way.”

Meanwhile, Antonio Reynoso, the sitting Brooklyn Borough President, lost to Mamdani-backed Claire Valdez in the race to replace retiring U.S. Rep. Nydia Velázquez.

Valdez received 58.1 percent of the vote, while Reynoso received 32.5 percent, and Queens Councilmember Julie Won received 7.5 percent, according to NY1.

Reynoso attracted criticism from Velázquez, a left-leaning Democrat who has represented the Brooklyn and Queens district for decades.

Lander‘s victory was likely sealed by Mamdani‘s endorsement, as well as his own stance on issues like Israel‘s role in the Middle East conflict.

Reynoso did not immediately respond to a request for comment, but said at an afterparty with his supporters, “Every time we speak to a voter, we let another person know that a better tomorrow is possible, and that is invaluable work.”

James Whelan, president of the Real Estate Board of New York, said in a statement, “We are prepared to engage with elected officials focused on increasing housing opportunities, creating jobs and strengthening New York’s economy.”

Valdez and Lander were not the only candidates to win with Mamdani‘s help on Tuesday, as Democratic socialist Darializa Avila Chevalier also unseated incumbent U.S. Rep. Adriano Espaillat.

Chevalier received 49.4 percent of the vote, while Espaillat received 45.9 percent, according to NY1.
